It shouldn't surprise that
the most colourful autumnal displays ...
... were in gardens ...
... but individual trees
in the countryside could also be very dramatic ...
... and subtle shades relaxing
in early morning stillness.
Great Langdale and Chapel
Stile from the Grasmere path shows an increasing incidence of
auburn autumnal shades ...
... as does this view of
Elterwater village from higher up the path.
Over the ridge: Grasmere
lake and beyond, Fairfield.
Down at shore level: looking
in the same direction.
From the same place, looking
east towards the weir.
Looking across to Helm Crag
...
... and to Dunmail Raise.
The grey plastered exterior
of Grasmere Parish Church a suitable foil for the riot of colour
courtesy of the garden centre opposite.
A more 'natural' (?) landscape
at the Oaks, at least one not planted up for artistic effect ...
... and of their neighbours
at The How, from across Loughrigg Tarn.
"What is this life
if, full of care,
We have no time to stand
and stare?"
W H Davies
(1871-1940)
Half the joy that beauty
brings is lost if it cannot be shared.
