MaccSnow!
Contrary to UK popular belief,
fostered by lazy reporting from the Media, Macclesfield does not
regularly get cut off by snow. It never used to, even 'when we
had proper winters'! What does happen is the road to Buxton, somewhere
around the Cat and Fiddle, gets blocked by snow or crashed vehicles;
but we can usually move north, south and west to a greater or
lesser degree, even in the worst conditions. Nevertheless it is
still an exciting occurrence when snow does arrive in a significant
amount, at least for this old little boy!
Yesterday evening (27 Jan)
we had snow; and this intrepid snapper went out armed with camera
and tried, not wholly successfully, to capture some of the scene.
It was easier in the daylight:
Turner Towers, late morning with a slight thaw just starting.
Small snowman on a neighbour's
front lawn.
Down on the canal: no ice,
just a surface coating of slush channelled through by the mating
Mallards.
Not a day for taking the
cruiser out along the canal ...
... or hiring a narrow-boat
(barge).
From under the Buxton Road
bridge, a bespattered view of the Hovis Mill and Marina.
Looking back at the Hovis
Mill, where the Hovis flour was milled and the Hovis brand created,
now regenerated as apartments.
Slushy rushes in the Marlpool
off Barracks Lane.
Looking north over Throstle's
Nest from the end of Cottage Lane (it really is shot in colour!).
Swans' Pool from Barracks
Lane and ...
... Swans' Pool towards
Barracks Lane (both b&w'd in Photoshop)
Late afternoon, looking
from my study window: the clouds had blown away to the south ...
... and, from my bathroom
window, the sun was disappearing behind a gold edged line of low
dark cloud.
